I have loved the two other Crais books I had gotten as gifts (The Promise and Suspect) because of their canine heroine, Maggie, so I decided to give other Crais books in my library a try. I'll stick with this author-his plot was good, the story was fast paced and exciting. This one was my first Crais audio, so now when I read these I'll have the character's voices in my head, which is good because the Elvis Cole character is even funnier than I had imagined and the Joe Pike character is much more serious than I had imagined him. The series makes for great vacation reads. Also, good to know that you don't have to read them in any particular order to enjoy them.
I know this book is "just" a mystery-thriller with a reasonably predictable plot and the usual suspense-inducers. However, the characters in this book were so interesting and believable that I did not really worry about the plot. I was interested in the characters and their development more than I was in the storyline. Not to say the story was bad. It was a pretty typical action adventure with a large body count and plenty of suspense and plot twists (not entirely believable, but then it is fiction . . .). I would normally give three stars tops to a casual read like this, but this book really grabbed me.
Read this book in the past, as I recall it was a good read.
This novel features Joe Pike more than Elvis Cole but Cole does have a role. I think this was good move by Crais. The development of the Pike character I think will serve the series well. You won’t be disappointed, this was a very good book.
a full of suspense story. very recommended if you like to read a typical American action movie.

Robert Crais writes about smart mouthed Elvis Cole, a private detective, and his tough, monosyllabic, associate, Joe Pike. Cole usually takes the lead, but in this case Pike is asked to save the life of a federal witness, after it looks like the Justice Department, or FBI is leaking like a sieve.
It’s not exactly Dickens, but it’s a good read, rattling along at a good clip, with no obvious plot holes jumping out at you, as so read the book.
My one grumble would be that there were times that Pike and Cole were a little slow to work out where plot twists were, but it was still a good book.

I'm reading lots of mysteries on my sabbatical when I'm not working on my research. Robert Crais' Elvis Cole series is fun. This is the first book in the series that focuses mainly on his partner, Joe Pike. Enjoyable read!
