I remember reading some Elvis Cole mysteries in the past. This is a neat look at the background and personality of his enigmatic sidekick Joe Pike.
Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are always great, but this was the weakest of them all. But when your weakest is a 3 out of 5 you are still doing well.
Needed more Elvis, but the action and suspense made for an enjoyable quick read. It was quick because I had trouble putting it down, but part of that might be because I just had a cataract surgery, and this was an audiobook so it was easy on my eyes, and I also had more of free time.
I like the Joe Pike character, but perhaps he's not great as a main character. He doesn't have much to say; kind of like the Clint Eastwood character in the early westerns. But some of what he does say is fairly profound, in a way. At least it was to "the girl", as they refer to Larkin Conner Barkley. But don't come down too hard on them, she acted pretty immature for much of the story, although seemed to redeem herself a bit at the end with the help of Joe Pike's psychoanalysis, which she deemed better than years of professional analysis.
He also has some insights into Elvis Cole, and brings up things we never knew about why he admires him even though Elvis is so different.

Thank you so much to my Goodreads friend, Danielle for introducing me to Joe Pike!
Pike is your classic tortured Hero and I had a great time reading this book.

First of all, lets get this one straight.. I'm in LOVE with Joe Pike..
Ok...
I don't know how, nor why.. But this is my first reading by Robert Crais. And I loved every minute of it..
It wasn't boring, I couldn't guess where the events are heading..
I wished that Elvis Cole participation was more detailed.. I really enjoyed his lines and presence. He have a great sense of humour that could have added a lot to the amusing of this novel.
For me, Joe Pike's character was perfect.. I felt sad for him when he thinks about his past.. I admired the way he react to his own emotions and the way he hide it..
I still don't get the reason why he wear his fucking sunglasses all day long.. I was kinda hoping he would take them off eventually, but he didn't /:
I will definitely read the rest series that featured Joe Pike, and I will also start the one with Elvis Cole as the main character.

I think I would have enjoyed this more if Elvis Cole was a bigger part of the story. He is A much more likable and funny protagonist than Joe Pike. Will try another Elvis Cole book I think next, and steer clear where Pike is the main focus
adventurous
mysterious
A fast paced thriller with likeable characters and believable situations.
