Up to the final pages, I could not tell what would have happened in the end!
What a complex story! Never boring or repetitive.
Great description of the body language, demeanour, and "biology"- in the sense that the breathing, bloodshot eyes, and other biological characterizations are detailed and important to understand the situation when many - if not all- are lying.

The Maltese Falcon was a University read for my Screenwriting Adaptation across Media class. What a wild ride! Such snappy dialogue and fast paced. I thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns. A hell of an easy read as well.
I thoroughly recommend it and plan on reading more of Hammett's books in the future.

There's a reason Sam Spade is the standard by which all others are judged. The writing is less convoluted than Chandler and Spade is ever-so-slightly less of a prick than Marlowe.

I was disappointed by this book. The hero was unlikeable, as were all the other characters. It hasn't aged well.
I read it for the San Francisco references, which I got plenty of. It was also fun to read. To me, it seemed full of cliches, but maybe this is the "Seinfeld is unfunny" idea - this book and its peers originated these cliches.
