This was my reading mini vacation today :) I read [b:The Big Sleep|2052|The Big Sleep|Raymond Chandler|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1371584712s/2052.jpg|1222673] last year and although I enjoyed it, I was really so not interested in reading more. It was unbelievably sexist and homophobic and the lingo was heavy handed and overdone. I've found much to love in neo-noir sources like [b:Fade Out|13544694|Fade Out|Nova Ren Suma|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1338684468s/13544694.jpg|6156356] by [a:Nova Ren Suma|2741432|Nova Ren Suma|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1315521193p2/2741432.jpg] and one of my favorite comics to date, [b:Fatale, Vol. 1: Death Chases Me|13580807|Fatale, Vol. 1 Death Chases Me|Ed Brubaker|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1333712557s/13580807.jpg|19165703] by [a:Ed Brubaker|37450|Ed Brubaker|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1230612199p2/37450.jpg] and Sean Phillips, so I was really disappointed that I didn't love The Big Sleep. The Maltese Falcon fixes so many of those problems that I found myself enjoying this one tremendously and not stressing about the few things I was unsure of. I'm fairly sure I will never figure out what 'cracking foxy' means though. This was just pure fun. I was kind of expecting something hokey about the origins of this highly sought after falcon but the author actually came up with a totally cool story for it. This book was just enough fun that I checked out [b:The Thin Man|80616|The Thin Man|Dashiell Hammett|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1321111302s/80616.jpg|1336952] from the library today. I hope it's as good.

Drenched in badassery.
It's set long enough ago for me to think it's cool and not awful. That's what my GoodReads friend Ian said was the difference between this and a Tom Clancy novel.
The Maltese Falcon has inspired me to read a Tom Clancy novel. It has expanded my pallet, and for the rest of my life probably I'll be getting the occasional hankering to read book hard-boiled and badass.

About as classic as a hard-boiled detective mystery can get. Made me want a cigarette and a glass of bourbon. Sam Spade is such a fun character to read about!

Sam Spade is a 1930s private detective, he is hired by Miss Wonderley under false pretenses but very soon her true intentions are reveled.
She is one of many people searching for the Maltese Falcon, a statue of great value.

This was an almost entertaining read.
Unfortunately it was not for me.

This book hits all the notes you expect it to. Since this has probably been copied ten times over in every film noir, it's hard to fall in love with. Too familiar, but overall worth the read. Sam Spade is the essential hard boiled detective.
