a fun, if trope-filled, noir romp through 20s San Fran.

It's always fun to read the original version of a thing.

This book certainly doesn't pass the Bechdel past. While there is certainly a strong male character, I found his oozing machismo that overtook all women in his path a bit much.

I thought this was going to be right up my alley... however, I just didn’t connect with the story or the people in it.

What a fast and fun story! The action and dialogue are sharp and quick and the characters are intriguing - I can't wait to watch now the film now. Very enjoyable!

I thought I was going to love it after really enjoying The Thin Man and The Big Sleep(although maybe i only connect these because of the Humphrey Bogart factor?), but The Maltese Falcon never really clicked for me. I think I enjoyed the last third the most, but I never found myself particularly engrossed in the mystery or fascinated by Spade and his world the way I wanted to be.

I'm four chapters in and I don't think I'll finish it. It might be the translation, but I'm not enjoying Hammett's writing style. I don't need an in-depth description of everyone's outfit. I don't find it adds anything to the story. I found that if you removed the descriptions of people's outfit and the furniture around them it'd make for very short paragraphs. The dialogues were good, though. I may just watch the movie instead.

Hard-boiled eggs? My thing. Hard-boiled detective fiction? Not my thing.
