God. Finally. I hated this book, but I finished because it’s a considered a classic. I see by my stats it took me a full year.

Well, I liked the ending.

Enjoyable, but very much a product of its time period. I'd seen the movie version years ago, and always been curious about the book. From what I can remember, the movie actually follows the book fairly closely. A few things got cut out for length, but no major plot/character shifts.

The thing that surprised me the most were the paragraphs describing each of the characters' appearances in the first chapter. They seemed unnecessarily detailed. I wasn't aware of that as a noir affectation, but it could be. I haven't read much noir to compare.

While this is an interesting insight into what entertained the masses back in the day, it hasn't really stood the test of time. I don't think Mr Hammett would fair very well in the age of feminism, and the plot was a little overblown and predictable.

He had me on page one, at "Blond Satan."
