I love a book that can make me smile, make me cry, and make me feel for the characters. Reading this book had me falling in love with the characters and their deep, personal challenges, all while the devastation of WWII raged on around them. Sarah Sundin does a wonderful job pulling this novel together, leaving you wanting to learn more and yet feeling fulfilled in God's amazing grace and the beauty of this tale.

This is the second book in the Wings of Glory series by Sarah Sundin and continues the story with another Novak brother, Jack. The Novak brothers are all B-17 bomber pilots flying in the US Eighth Air Force during WW2, and it was fun to get to know one of Walter’s brothers better after reading his story in the first Wings of Glory Book, A Distant Melody.

This was a very sweet story, and I really loved Jack and Ruth. There were some hard topics tackled in this storyline, and Sarah Sundin handled writing those aspects of the story very well–as always! I would highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy Christian historical fiction with deep themes of God’s grace and redemption. I also really enjoyed the character development in this story with both of the main characters.

Another great Sarah Sundin story! I can never recommend her books enough.

*Trigger warning: talk about rape, attempted rape by an antagonist*
Otherwise, this book is squeaky clean and soooo sweet.
Now onto my review/reaction.

Wow! I'm stunned.

The title perfectly suits the story ... the characters learn lessons and overcome fears ... they fall in love. ♥ ...

This book was so beautiful. It just proves Sarah is an amazing writer. One thing in particular that I LOVE about Sundin's novels is how there's just enough wholesome sweetness balanced with powerful messages and themes. Bonus points for all the references to awesome 1940s swing jazz!

Though certain sections of the novel start to read like historical research reports, when I skim over the technical bits, I can still get the gist of what's going on. And I still enjoy it! This also shows that Sundin isn't really a flowery writer. She places her metaphors, allusions and adjectives strategically where they hold the most power, rather than wasting them in places where they aren't necessary. I love her writing style with all the drama and the heady sweetness of romance.

One thing I've gathered as I read Sundin's novels is that however different their romances are, her characters always develop a friendship before/as they fall in love. I'm a firm believer in marrying your best friend. When I read that "female protagonist" wishes she could confide in "male protagonist" to hear his calm advice, or "male protagonist" wishes "female protagonist" could see ______ because he knows it would make her smile, it makes me sooooo happy. I want to see them have fun together, have spiritual conversations, and just spend time together as friends before they jump into physical intimacy. Ultimately, Sundin's romances are so much more sweet because the characters are intimate on so many different levels, not just romantically. This was especially well portrayed in A Memory Between Us due to Ruth's hard past. Developing their friendship first was necessary to break down the barriers Ruth had put up to protect herself from being hurt. Meanwhile, Jack learned to be patient in the process. They learned so much more than this, but in an effort to not spoil the story, I will leave it there.

If you haven't read the first book in the Wings of Glory series, read it first. It's just as good! And many of the points I make here, are in that one too.

Ultimately, this novel was a joy to read. I didn't want it to end. Even though, I desperately wanted it to end so I could get to the happy ending. I'm so excited to read the finale of this series, and I will definitely be reading more Sundin in the future. Keep writing Sarah! I will be here, ready to read more. :)

Ruth Doherty works as a nurse helping the wounded in the war. Major Jack Novak Jr. airplane crashes. Jack is lucky to have survived. Jack awakes in the hospital to the most beautiful image. Though Jack is drugged up on morphine and feeling no pain, he knows that Ruth is his. In fact he tells her that he is going to marry her. Ruth laughs Jack’s comments of. Ruth is used to the men that she cares for thinking they are in love with her. Ruth knows she is not as pretty as the other women and besides she is too busy with her work to date anyone.

Jack can’t wait to get back up in the sky. Unfortunately for him, he is grounded for at least a month. Jack is smitten by Ruth. Jack senses that Ruth is different from other women. He tries to pursed her with gifts but that doesn’t really work. Can Jack convince Ruth that she belongs with him?

A Memory Between Us is book two of the Wings of Glory novels. It can be read as a stand alone novel. Just like Mrs. Sundin’s first novel, A Distinct Memory, I fell in love with this book. I really was fond of Jack. The way he kept pursing Ruth was funny. When she wouldn’t fall for his charms so easily it bruised Jack’s ego a little but then it made him fight for Ruth that must harder. At first Ruth seems like she is in the wrong place. She should be as far away from the war as possible. Though, once you get to know Ruth don’t let her quiet demeanor fool you. She is very strong and quite capable of handling herself. I can’t wait to fly the skies with the next Wings of Glory novel.

An incredible follow up to book one. I love both Jack and Ruth’s character growth throughout the book. Would absolutely recommend!

A great sequel to a distant memory, though it probably could have been read on its own. I love that this series does have an element of faith in it, but it's not overwhelming or in your face or excessively cheesy. Just a good love story with historical details and a great ending!

This book was sooooo good! Sarah Sundin is such an amazing author! Oh my goodness, the emotional rollercoaster this book sent me on!!! I felt joy, pain, frustration. I laughed, I cried (okay, not really, but I came close). You name it, I felt it! Especially in regards to Jack. He's a... complicated character to say the least. Loveable, but complicated.

Book #2 in the series about the Novak brothers. I think this one was a little better than the first one (which I did enjoy). I liked Ruth and Jack and about halfway through I had trouble putting the book down. The only thing I had trouble with was
Spoiler Ruth's stubborn insistence that GOD had to save her...it reminded me of the old joke about man caught in a rising flood. He is offered a rope, a boat and a helicopter, all of which he declines because "God will save him". He drowns, goes up to Heaven and asks God why He didn't save him and God says "I sent you a rope, a boat and a helicopter -- what more do you want?" What exactly was she expecting God to do? He usually works through people, why couldn't Jack have been HIS provision for her??
That aside, it was a very good story and I miss them already. :) At least, there's one more book in the series!
