Much darker than the film

I wanted to read this because well I knew it would be darker than I thought. That was true! Going mute, feet that feel like you’re walking on broken glass and knives and if the prince marries someone else poof sea foam. She didn’t even get the prince. She since up to be mute, in pain and then dies. I still like the story but damn. Poor life choices for sure.

I’d probably rate this three stars just for the written content, but I have to bump it up a half-star for the awesome illustrations. The color palette is so striking, this edition is quite stunning to look at.

The supplementary material here, such as the original ending to the story Andersen had crossed out and some “love letters” from Andersen to a male friend, add an interesting layer to the classic tale. The afterword by Jean-Baptiste Coursaud explicates the biographical interpretation of the story well, though it does feel a little obvious and like “queer theory 101.”
