I really enjoyed this Rios backstory. It was chock full of references to TOS, TNG, and DS9. I can’t wait to continue reading the Picard series!!!

A fun Star Trek story revolving around the character Cristobal Rios from the first two seasons of Star Trek: Picard. The story details how Rios gained position of his ship the La Sirena and the story referenced Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek:? The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and surprisingly Star Trek Vi: The Undiscovered Country.

Rios is my favorite character in the Picard series and I really liked this story that also shows the grittier non-Federation life. Listened to about 2/3 of this and then switched to ebook when my audiobook loan disappeared.

This was a fun book! The origin of all of the Emergency Holograms on La Sirena was hilarious. The character portrayals were interesting and the plot kept me reading late into the night. It's amazing how the author was able to lend humor to the tragic story of Cristobal Rios without it becoming an emotional/tonal see-saw. I really enjoyed it.

A fun read, with lots of fan service (paused in the book to go back and watch episodes I hadn’t seen in some time - just to enrich) while setting up a lot for the Picard series. A really enjoyable jaunt!

A fun, interesting and action-packed story that makes light on some periods of Rios' life that are not mentioned in the Picard Seasons 1 and 2, though quite a few threads lead back to the tv show events. Some of the mysteries at the core of the novel are only solved at the very end, and quite a few plot points are kept up and open for most of the story. Lots of characters are introduced and keep showing up in the novel, some of them predictably so. Rios sometimes seems only a pawn in a wild game of power and secret scheming, despite being repeatedly described as a genius pilot and engineer. In my opinion, the coolest bit, which on its own is worth reading/listening to the novel for, is finding out how the multiple holograms on La Sirena came to be. The narrator did a good job.

I am tempted to mark this 5 stars. It is surely 4.5 no doubt. This is a breath of fresh air for me, and adds considerable depth to Rios who now might just be my favorite character from the Picard show. Overall, this story was just absolute fun. Rios in this novel basically becomes the Han Solo of the Trek world. Wooing various women and botching his job as a cargo hauler.

When the stakes were extremely high in The Last Best Hope and still major in The Dark Veil to get something that was inconsequential to the galaxy at large and just fun was exactly what I didn't know I needed.
