Almost two stars, but giving the story the benefit of the doubt as this was a distracted read for me. The setting and the general outline of characters was great and intriguing. The pacing and presentation of information became very tiresome. Characters given the spotlight, then ignored, and finally pop up in ways that appear out of character from that brief previous moment. Hated the ending, huge tone and narrative shift (where are they now) without getting the answers to the original plot points, unless there were nuances I missed. Author’s note also annoyed me.

Around 40% I took a break from this book because I didn’t understand what the plot was . Once I came back, I realized the plot was that there are multiple plots with related themes and became a lot more interested. This felt like a modern gatsby, with inconsequential conversation and little mysteries along with a big finale.

I must have read a different book from all the glowing reviewers. Clichéd writing style, weighed down by historical research. The noted Atkinson 'wit' just didn't seem witty to me.

Historical novels are my thing, but this one was not for me. There were too many characters and plots that were trying to weave together but it felt forced. Characters that kept missing each other and in an attempt to resolve all characters fate left me more confused as if I was missing something. Miss for me.
