This one was a whole lotta “meh.” The plot twists were okay, but they were done too early into the story.

Not sure if I’ll continue this series. It’s a little too dramatic.

I wish I loved this volume as much as everyone else did, but . . . nope.

I can't stand Riiko's naive eternally forgiving dense attitude towards everything. I hate that Watase's female characters are either blushing klutzy paragons of virtue or conniving hate-filled backstabbers and 'bitches' who exist merely to ruin the main protagonist's life and make the MC look like saints in comparison. Girl, you need to deal with all that internalized misogyny that you've had since Fushigi Yuugi and Ceres.

I am getting real tired of Soshi's crush on Riiko, since it makes him do stupid things. Soshi has NO RIGHT to get upset at Riiko for not returning his feelings when for the most part, Soshi never actually says outright "I like you, will you consider my feelings?". Human beings are not psychic! Riiko can't read his mind! If Soshi won't say it out loud, he can't expect her to get the hint through lovesick looks and vague expressions of emotions.

The entire "if another person kisses Night, they'll become Night's owner!" shtick is tired and contrived. Especially when you add the condition of sex equally a 'fully imprint', meaning that their relationship is a sham unless it's been consummated. Which wow, so problematic on so many levels, but I've never labored under the delusion that Watase is some great social commentator.

I'm not touching the fact that the owner of the Vietnamese restaurant doesn't look human like everyone else. Because that's too questionable to think about.

The sad thing is, I'm still reading this series. It made me laugh a few times, and I actually want to see how it ends. Plus, Night's antics as he figures out how human beings work amuse me. But I won't be making a huge effort to get my hands on book 3 any time soon.

Quick Summary: A contemporary Shojo Manga

My Review: Absolute Boyfriend, Vol. 2 by Yuu Watase is part two in the Absolute Boyfriend series.

About the Book: Riiko is in for a world of trouble in this edition. She is betrayed by someone close to her. She is desperate to make some money and soon finds herself in a compromising situation. Her boyfriend is changing right before her eyes. Her best friend is suddenly making a dramatic declaration. Everything that seemed to be under control is so not.

My Final Say: Book 2 is even better than book 1! I cannot wait to see what comes next.

Other: I just found out that this was made into a flick. You better believe I'm adding it to my watchlist, once I find it. I adore J-dramas, K-dramas, P-dramas...well, you get the picture.

Whilst the last third of this volume made me laugh out loud SOOOO much and mostly made up for the uncomfortable premise of this instalment, I must say I wasn't a fan of the emphasis on sex by Gaku in this.

Gaku takes Night and Riiko to an island retreat where he gives her 3 days in which to have sex with Night (to prevent Night from being stolen away and imprinted by another woman who may kiss him). I found this very uncomfortable to read as Gaku was completely removing Riiko's choice in the matter and reducing the success of their "relationship" to sex! [Another thing to note: Soshi was on the island too since he confessed his feelings for Riiko to Night and the latter brought him along as a type of gentleman's agreement!] Thankfully though, nothing ensued and soon moved on to more hilarious matters involving Riiko's dad meeting Night for the first time! I laughed a LOT at this section. Watase is fantastic at capturing the various reactions of her characters!

4.5 stars - dropped half a star because of THAT ending *sob*

Volume 2 focuses more on Soshi's (Riiko's neighbour and childhood friend) feelings towards Riiko and shows him to be an incredibly thoughtful and protective individual. Mika (Riiko's supposed friend) turns out to be a two-faced bitch as she goes behind Riiko's back and tries to seduce Night, however, he is having none of it (much to my delight!)

In order to keep Night (and pay the forfeit for not having 1 million dollars to pay for him) Riiko agrees to show Night what it means to be a woman and for him to gather data on understanding the female race. She gets a job as a waitress and discovers that Soshi is a waiter there! Cue lots of cute and awkward moments! Feeling guilty about Riiko getting a job, Night decides to gain employment too but on his way home is kidnapped by a group of guys who mistake him for one of their male escorts - he quickly gains employment and becomes a firm favourite with the ladies.

Ending - Soshi kisses Riiko and reveals his feelings for her whilst Night is kissed by one of his female clients which re-programmes him in becoming her lover and not Riiko's! Riiko is now considered his ex but she wants him back and will have to prevent losing him forever before he does the "deed".
