I really don’t like when there’s just inexplicable tension between two characters. Like they do not exchange words but there eyes meet across a room and there’s electricity shooting down both their respective bodies. And then they fight their attraction to each other and it’s meant to be smoldering and intense and it’s just unfathomable. FIA is a Riftborne, which basically means she’s one of the children from the country that they beat In the war, whose parents and homeland were exterminated a la Fourth Wing style. But she has this amazing special never before seen focus/power that he just has to have on his elite task force which is called Venom. She hates the institution he represents because not only did they destroy her homeland but they also like murdered a bunch of her friends when they were all together at the orphanage. But he’s weirdly flirty and mysterious but also can’t stay away from her. But also wants to give her private lessons. And also appears to already be in a relationship with his 3rd in command whose blood can melt through anything like acid. Charming. Anyway, they bang. He still tells her almost nothing. He does acknowledge her in public after she has a 90s style make over that involves a curling iron heated over a fire. Anyway, at the end she gets captured by the bad guys cos no one would believe her when she said she saw them attacking in a dream. Turns out her new friends are actually the enemy and there’s a continent wide espionage plot that’s all about to be revealed in the next book. I do hate a cliffhanger. And a love triangle. Quadrilateral. Anything that’s not a straight line really.
