YA vibes. The writing was overly simple. The FMC is soooo special, wow look at her and her special hair and special power she can’t control that will be exposed in 16 pages of the book to a VIP enemy that for some reason doesn’t instantly kill her. So many cliches already. I’ve read so many books with different versions of the same plot.
I don’t think it was badly written but I don’t have patience for YA writing currently.
Too much telling not enough showing.

The dialogue and style felt a little more YA
I loved the whimsical world building though. Sort of a classic fairytale feel meets military dystopian vibe. Despite the action to set it off getting into the training etc. felt like a bit of a slow start.

The thing is I’m liking everything so far but it just doesn’t feel like it seeped into my bones like I wanted it to. My investment in characters and dynamics, the interesting political and physical crisis they’re having, pacing- it all just feels like it got me halfway there. It’s so close to being a story I feel a need to read but just falls short. I’m definitely going to read the next one I’m just hoping to sink more into the story and characters and chalk it up to setting it up?

The dream stuff pulled me back in making me feel like there was something less simplistic and more intricate about the story and storytelling. Made we want to go back and reread those parts.

And the ending definitely made me more excited for the world and the character dynamics to expand so I’m excited for the next one, just wanted a bit more in this first book.

Also (Unrelated to anything) if we don’t get the bracelet back I’m gonna lose it haha.

If this book was a house, it would be missing the foundation, the walls, the roof, the furniture.... Imagine wooden beams just sticking out of mud. That's this book. The plot was hollow, the characters were hollow, the romance!

2 stars solely for the first and last 10% of this book. The inciting incident was intriguing and had me excited to read the rest of Fia's story, the following 80% I was BORED. This story could have been told in like 100 pages and I think I would enjoy it, but I feel a resentment towards the middle of this book. It felt like it wasted my time.

Unfortunately, I don't see myself continuing this series.

Liked the book overall. Dialogue wasn’t the best but plot was ok.
slow-paced

soooo ummmmmmm it took forever for something to happen, when there was banter i was kicking my feet squealing but based off the last chapter i think i fell in love w the mmc for nothing... can tell the author took heavy inspiration from RY and fourth wing and now im feeling a tamlin part 2
