This book is god tier for me now, I devoured it in less than 24 hours. The characters are so well written, as is the unique world building. Can’t wait until book 2 comes out!

Well that was unexpected. I love a last minute plot twist that you don't see coming.  We have our FMC who has power she's terrified by and an MMC that sees her potential. They clash, although I hesitate to call it true enemies to lovers it does give the vibe.  But attraction is nearly instantaneous.

You get hints of academia/training as she joins the guards she's hated all her life. Her powers become a part of her instead of something to fear.  She transforms into a version of herself she actually admires and then they set off to the front to try and drive back wraiths that threaten the realm's existence.

Sexual tension comes to a head, we get one altogether too brief moment of fire and spice as they come together then an attack of epic proportions that literally rock her world.

And then of course, plot twist and cliff hanger. And now I have to wait months for book 2.  Grrrr

This book was just a genuinely lovely surprise. I enjoyed this book and found that I did not want to point it down while I was reading it. For a debut novel, it was incredible.

Things I liked:
- The story line/plot was fantastic. I enjoyed the magic system and the world building. The pacing was great and I did not get bored with any part of this story. The ending was amazing and not at all what I expected. After that ending, I can't wait to see what happens next in the next two books.
- The characters were so well written and there was so much depth. At first, I wasn't sure how I felt about the General, but he grew on me the more that I read. I just wish that his character was explored more. Fia was such a strong FMC, and I loved her character progression as the story went on. Things definitely went from 1 to 100 throughout this book and I just know that Fia will become even better.
- The relationship was a definite slow burn. The build up from enemies to mentor/mentee with chemistry that the two had was sooooo good. It was definitely not a main focus of this book and it was brought up multiple times here and there as mentions and experiencing jealousy, but nothing happens for most of the book, which I was completely fine with, and was happy that it allowed for more focus on the plot of this book.

Things I did not like:
- There was literally nothing that I had a major problem with. If I had to nitpick, maybe just too much focus on the jealousy and throwing balls when people are dying. Those two things were things that I found myself rolling my eyes at once or twice.

Do I recommend this book? Yes! I would recommend this book for any fans of new adult romantasy, who love books that are focused a bit more on the plot than the romance. It did give me slight Fourth Wing vibes and I saw someone else compare it to Powerless. I did not read Powerless, so I can't 100% say if this is true or not.

I had high hopes for this book. It did not meet any of them.

The world building was almost non-exsistent. The magic poorly utilized and badly explained. The pacing throughout the book was somehow both to fast and not fast enough. Bits we could have gladly skipped over were explained in detail where combat classes and strategy training it would have been fun to see were written of as "in the last weeks we....." constantly.

The romance was lackluster and fully unbelieveable. The MMC and FMC barely interact yet by the halfway mark of the book she's barely able to stop thinking about him and is jealous anytime he's with his female third in command. Even though she has no right or reason to be jealous.

A thoroughly disappointing read.

Book is a waste of time. Nothing happens and I could not force myself to continue on just to finish. I skipped to the final chapter to see if I should bother reading and it turns out you don’t have to read the majority of the book to understand what is happening. I cannot imagine trying to make it through the entire trilogy based off this book.

Hell yes. This book is filled with beautiful imagery, intense scenes, a fascinating and dark world, and some fun characters.

Fia Riftborne, an outcast, spends her time trying to hide her powers so she isn't killed in a world that brand her people outcasts after a rebellion. When her powers are discovered by a General, he works with her to build her powers and bring her into his unit wielders. I loved watching Fia go through her journey. She is spunky, rough around the edges, but also watching her grow was fascinating. I love a good raw and real FMC to root for.

This fun, twisty tale handles some dark themes really well. Parker and Bree did a wonderful job of crafting this world without overloading the reader. It was nice to have the worldbuilding treated as an onion with layers to be peeled back over time.

The plot moves along -- draw characters to the ongoing battles that happen around the country, but the cliffhanger really makes you question everything you thought about the plot Bree and Parker present through the whole book!

I am (im)patiently waiting for more in this series!
