I have conflicting feelings about this book…but I’m going to settle for 2 stars.
I didn’t realize until 20% in that the actual male lead wasn’t going to show up until book 2 😭. reading this book felt like a waste because I knew the female lead was going to have a different love interest in book 2. also, I didn’t like laryk (the male lead of this book). he was with another woman for a majority of the book so…he’s gross 🤮. I liked fia (the female lead) though. I don’t have much else to say because I only trudged through this to get to book 2 lol.

I was told to read this book by one of my friends and I am so glad that I listened. I had no expectations going in as I haven’t read anything by either of these authors before but this fantasy was so good. Riftborne is about Fia Riftborne. Fia is a woman who grew up an in orphanage due to her parents being killed in the rebellion. She doesn’t know much about her history and has never understood why her focus (powers) is so destructive and her looks are different from everyone else. Fia keeps to herself and pushes down her power at any chance that she can. She has never learned to properly use it but anytime she has used it, someone gets hurt. When Fia finds herself at one of the royal parties and her best friend convinces her to stay for a few drinks, things turn from bad to worst. While she’s taking a moment to herself in the forest she’s confronted by two girls who have always been mean to her. As the girls continue to taunt her, Fia’s emotions continue to rise until her power blasts out at both of them. Struggling to get away, Fia is seen by the General of the Guard, Laryk Ashford. Days pass and Fia is certain that the General will be coming for her but he never does….until one day. But instead of coming to arrest her, Laryk gives her a choice. Join him in the Guard where he will train her and her power or be executed. Not wanting her power to scare her for the rest of her life, she agrees to join the Guard and be a weapon for the very people who killed her family and kingdom. This book was a true whirlwind. There are so many questions throughout with a lot of Fia’s powers and as you go through you think you know everything. But with any fantasy, the moment you think you understand it all, everything gets flips on it’s head! The way this book ends, you have to go directly to book 2 to find out what happens!

♡ 4 stars
this was really fun and easy to read. i really related to fia and i loved all the side characters as well. also the character design was actually interesting compared to other romantasy books i’ve read. i actually didn’t really see the twist coming. i’m a bit scared for the next book though because i love laryk 💔
