Io so perché canta l'uccello in gabbia by Maya Angelou

challenging dark emotional informative reflective fast-paced

i absolutely loved this autobiography for it’s honesty, reflection, and observations. an eye-opening recount of life as a black child in america during the early/middle part of the 20th century, i found it especially interesting to read angelou’s experiences in both the deep south and san francisco bay area during her formative years. her story covers racism, misogyny, religion, displacement, self-acceptance, and belonging. while reading i couldn’t forget the fact that she was a child facing such abhorrent realities, but i recognize the power of knowing these stories. despite the heavy themes there is so much love as well, there is camaraderie and humor and acceptance even if those around her weren’t always outright with it. im dying to know the rest of her story!! im so eager to read her other work

I would like to have met Maya Angelou. She seems to have been a great person.

Interesting and often moving but sometimes felt more like a series of essays than a memoir
