My daughter was absolutely in love with this books. Especially with Dodie and Podgy and P-Dog.
I read this out loud to Alice and it was...okay. Better than some of the truly awful kids books out there but the slow pace of reading really highlighted its flaws. It was annoyingly paced--way too slow and ending every single chapter on a cliffhanger. And there were several gaping plot holes. Maybe my standards for kids books are too high but there are so many better ones to read out loud. Fine and enjoyable for a kid to read on their own so the rest of this series will be for her to read, I couldn't put myself through that.
I picked up this book on one of my many wandering bookstore trips. I thought it would be fun to read with the kids.
I'm glad I thought that. It was a highly enjoyable read. I lovely story filled with fantasy and adventure. It was enjoyed by all and upon the ending I was immediately asked to go get the next book in the series. I'd call that a win.

My kids loved it, but I was bored despite the fantastical events and setting. The Secret Zoo is predictable with a few thrilling moments.
I actually would probably give this book a 2 1/2 stars if I could. I really wanted to like this book more than I did. I loved the idea of a secret expansion to a zoo that allows animals to live in freedom alongside humans and be safe and protected. As many others have said though it lacked character development and I also felt it lacked a vivid description of the setting and certain parts of the plot (critical ones in my opinion) where also underdeveloped.
However, even though it can't compete with high quality fantasy literature I can already think of several students who would adore this book.

A Magical Read
What a read! I had picked this up based on the recommendation of a friend, but put it off for a while. I read it today after seeing a few more reviews for it.
Noah, Richie, Ella, and Megan are best friends with their own club ~ the Action Scouts. Megan disappears a few months after seeing something odd while in their fort. Noah, who is not only one of her best friends but also her older brother, decides to go looking for her, and Richie and Ella want to go, too. What they discover is an amazing and magical journey.
I know it says for 8-12 years old, but I don't think my nearly 8yo is quite ready for some of the adventures in this book. I will probably hold off a couple of years for her. She has a sweet and sensitive spirit and I feel some parts would be too much for her.
Spoiler-ish notes: mentions of magic, shadowy beings that fade/dissolve away (rather than walking or slipping away), war-time acts (one battle in particular), and some peril

This was decent. We enjoyed it, but we didn’t love it, sometimes the writing felt stilted and awkward. But it was a fun story!
my 9 year old daughter and I both got bored with this book and didn't find it worth finishing.
