When I started this book I was frustrated from all the back and forth. The poetic language and the metaphor for every single occurrence made me feel absolutely dizzy. But I'm grateful to have finished it.
It was funny at times, heart wrenching and confusing but it was also powerful. Even when I didn't fully understand what was going on, I felt compelled to keep reading and to understand the significance of all the stories told together. I definitely wouldn't recommend it to everyone but if you have patience and an interest in family ties and myth, this is the book for you.

It’s not the book it’s me! I just can’t get into it, but I’m so intrigued by the premise. Maybe another time.

Standing before the grave of her most-cherished Auntie, Betty recalls her early life and the stories she’s been told and read about Nuha Rummani, a woman larger than life whose presence ensured Betty’s very existence. As she faces her Auntie, she thinks about their co-existence, their similarities, and their history.

I don’t read a lot (see: any) literary fiction, so this was my first forray. What a terrifically fascinating story about a girl growing into herself in the shadow of the woman she adores. Betty, afflicted with a  unique skin color, grows up in her mother’s shame but Nuha’s love for her gives her the strength to blossom. Nuha’s story is so complex and rich, jumping off the page, further complicated by her history as a Palestinian woman in America who wants to go home and also wants the strength to love the woman she’s been in love with for years. I loved Nuha so, so much that it ached to learn of her passing, even though I expected it. Too little space, too big feelings.
