A bad-ass, likable and smart pirate captain is our protagonist. This book had sword-fights, bold escapes, sea battles, romance, clever pirate-ruses and a good sense of humour. What's not to love!

A fun swashbuckling historical fiction novel, unfortunately marred by typical racism of the time. The characters hate the countries with which they are at war, and there are black people who are enslaved by various characters. There is also the implication that slavery is bad for white people, but that isn't necessarily stated for other races. Some of the black slaves are stereotypes, and none are treated as a real fleshed out character.
Aside from that massive issue, it's an enjoyable book. Peter Blood is a clever, brave, vain man and Arabella is proud and kind. They find themselves at odds while Peter endures slavery and turns to piracy. The battles are clear and easy to follow, suitable villains, etc. A fun book to read but the racism is glaring.

Just great from beginning to end. The wisdom and cleverness of Blood, the adventures and conquests. The wit of Blood, and the sense of fairness. The sense of right and wrong that I never expected from a pirate. And all done ostensibly to win the girl! Wonderful story. (236 pages is unlikely. More like 370.)

Super fun pirate story, especially as an audio book. The tale itself is enjoyable and fast-paced, with plenty of sword fights and treachery. The scope of the story is far-reaching, pulling you across the Atlantic Ocean and dragging you into near-death encounters with political movements (without delving too deeply into them). The plot suffers a bit from cliche and predictability, and, let's face it, constant misunderstandings and refusal to *just talk to each other already* can only last so long before one gets frustrated. The book itself rates a 4 star for me, but the audio book narrated by B.J. Harrison is easily 5 stars: he's a fabulous performer.
⚔️I enjoyed this pirate adventure, but I will say the slavery was hard to read. I liked Captain Blood and his witty Irish lines. The “odyssey” opens with him watering his geraniums and a soldier comes to his office (physician) to help the wounded which felt like Hitchhikers Guide and Hobbit. Overall, a good story with battles, revenge, romance. It’s not a kissing book though.
