2.5/2.75 borderline. I prefer my Homer retellings to make more of an effort with the language- there was a plague of modernisms both in the internal and external dialogues of all characters.

Caveats: Yes, I love asexual lesbian relationships. Yes, I think it’s great that she’s made Helen of Troy butch. Yes, I think it’s great for there to be more friendships among the women and to discuss complex relationships with men, and how that can look. Yes, I think there’s space for discussions of women’s safety and the purpose of relationships. Yes, I like powerful women and women being capable!

But I felt much of it was a cop out instead of a remix. Other authors have made far more interesting decisions in how to walk the fine line between fate & modern expectations of plot.

It’s longer and less fun than girl goddess queen. The blurb hooked me but that was not enough to carry between some great moments (few and far between).
I will keep reading BF books, borrowing them from the library, but I’m never going to purchase one until I’m sure it’s not just “strong concept poor execution”.

I fell in love with Bea's writing in Girl, Goddess, Queen and this book has exceeded all my expectations. A powerful story about patriarchal ideals and how women turn their backs on it to persue what they truly desire in the midst of a war. I was gripped right until the end, and heavily empathised with Cassandra and her mental stability when she became a prophet ❤️

Wow wow wow!!
Knowing the story of the Trojan war, I wasn't expecting to be able to be surprised by anything in this- and yet it kept catching me off guard! What a phenomenal retelling, where not everyone has to die, where tragedy doesn't fall over it all, and where mortals can triumph against gods. Simply breathtaking, I've felt everything while reading this book, and I look forward to reading it again someday.

Bea Fitzgerald really manages to take a story you think you know, and sorrows you think you can anticipate, and fill it with enough fun and banter to keep you going — and then twist it all in something fully new.
