I'm very disappointed by this one. I think maybe I could have liked it if I had read it first and hasn't already read pawns gambit. But I feel like this reminded me so much of pawns gambit but not as strong.

I think the characters fell flat and the reason for the quest was very one dimensional until the end.

Hayes continues to be one of my fav authors this was sadly just a let down.

"Some swords strike with a growl, some with a roar. Some shake the battle like a rock slide, some bring rain like a wild flame. But there is one sword that passes with but a whisper, and you shall know it for it says: Death has been here."

Pretty entertaining. The prose is solid, and the action is fun. Surprisingly good lore for how short this is as well. Unfortunately I didn't really care too much for the characters besides Itami Cho, but the compelling plot compensated for that. I will definitely be reading more Rob J. Hayes.

This is certainly a self published fiction about Asian mythology written by a white man! Kept reading to see if it improved. It didn’t.

Honourable mentions to:
- the Red Bull of Fades
- the stupidest wrap up ever that entirely undercuts the first 150 pages
- one-dimensional, stereotype riddled characters
- using the wrong homonym (sheer vs shear)
- using commas when there wasn’t a new clause or subject

Characters were lovable but they were not that deep. It is a short book, but I wish it was longer so that I could connect more with the cast.

4 out of 10.

Can't connect to the characters; when I couldn't care less if one or all of them died that's when I knew the book is not for me.

A fun action book, rated lower because there's a lot of fat phobia.
