This is a very well written book that drives into heavy topics that the author does not shy away from.

TW: description of murders are a bit gory, so be aware

//

my very first S.A Cosby book has been completed! I have been wanting to read from this author for awhile. I got it from my local library. (support local libraries)

As per the synopsis, this is a story about a black sheriff in a southern town drowning in a VERY questionable and bloody history whose trying to hunt down a serial killer. There was no plot twist in this story and the reveal of the killer didn't do anything for me. But, the overall story I really enjoyed. Titus, who is the main character, did not annoy me and I found myself actually liking him (with the exception of his love life which I found to be an unnecessary part of the story no matter how small it was, but that's just me.)

I've never been a mystery/thriller lover but I do have the urge to delve into this genre this year. And, I was not disappointed. Now, while I was not wowed by this book it did make me an active participate to it. I found myself rolling my eyes, exclaiming disbelief, and read to fight some of these characters. If a book can make me do all of that, it's very likely a good damn book.

*At first this was going to be a 3.5 star but the middle part of this book bumped it up to a 4.*

Great and gripping start, mediocre middle, decent ending.
I think the slow pace in the book turned me off from the story for some time. I thought about dropping the book a few times but I continued.
I did enjoy the last few pages.
Would I read it again? No. Would I recommend it? To some people.
I wouldn't mind trying out this author again.

This was a dark book to read and the stuff movies get made of, but it’s actually an important treatise on the state of the South even today where many Whites still yearn for the days of Jim Crow and Black oppression.

This whole book was brutal. But Jiminy H. Cricket it was good. This wasn't a "whodoneit" type of mystery, more a hunt for a psychopath kind. Graphic and intense as heck but it is one of my new favorites.

This was so dark and twisted but so layered. Definitely not for the faint of heart. I loved it and was genuinely creeped out. I would love to see this turned into a movie.

Powerful story and timely book! Overall the writing is OK and the pacing is not perfect but it was entertaining and a thought provoking book. Listened on audio and did enjoy the narrator, slow-pace so had to increase speed to stay engaged in the story
