Interesting and ground-breaking sci-fi tale told in a Victorian England setting which creates a unique and captivating read. However, I feel that the dry and stale language of the 1800s isn’t able to convey the severity of the story as Wells intended. I wasn’t able to feel the emotions necessary to be felt in a story of this scale and horror. As well as some strange narrative choices which detracted from the impact of the book

I was going to rate it 4 stars, but then the Epilogue upped it to 5 for me. It was good all around, and I enjoyed it. I loved the introspection of the narrator throughout the whole thing, but the overwhelming sense of strangeness and surrealness that permeates that last scene really was the icing on the tasty science-fiction cake. How fun that after all that heat-ray, violent show, it's bacteria and disease that obliterate the Martian invaders. Through it all, the narrator had such a level head. It almost felt like disassociation the whole way through. And I totally loved that, honestly.

This was actually a reread for me, and it's strange to think how little of an impression on me the book made the first time around.
As a work of literature it represents so much, a clear and intelligent allegory for colonialism, many of the aspects of the beginning of the science fiction genre and a cast of nameless characters who present so vividly how people respond to shock and fear.
Having not thought much of it originally, the audiobook version with David Tennant as the reader was excellent, he paints a clear and engaging story that I found difficult to put down (well, pause).
The ending remains disappointing on a second reading, but I don't think it detracts from the book as a whole, and the defeat of giants by the smallest possible force is still a powerful statement.
