This prequel to 'Shadow of the Wind' holds many of the same pleasures: gorgeous writing, mysteries to unravel, and a deep love of books and storytelling. I found this one darker than 'Shadow,' though. Where Daniel's defining characteristic tends to be curiosity to the point of nosiness, David Martin is a more desperate man with a host of personal demons, including his strange employer. But perhaps the most significant departure is that everything in 'Shadow,' no matter how eerie or how strangely coincidental, could theoretically happen in the real world. In 'Angel,' there clearly seems to be a supernatural element at work...

Book was very interesting at beginning, but it got sidetracked a lot. It didn’t grip me the same way as previous one.
It had elements of fantasy (magical realism), which I liked.
Last 1/3 of the book were not readable, I just skipped most of it.

I liked this one a lot and it was definitely enhanced by my reading it while visiting Barcelona! Having just visited a lot of the places was very cool. It wasn’t a perfect book and maybe it’s best savored with a little distance from reading Shadow of the Wind, but damn does this author have the sauce. The ending was poetic but also…I found it odd and I would have worded a handful of things differently (and I bet most female authors would have too) so it couldn’t be interpreted weirdly. But that’s kind of my only gripe!

Pretty good book. I liked Shadow of the Wind better but this Was written in a very similar style.
