When I found out Carlos Ruiz Zafon had a new book I was estatic. His book from few years ago, Shadow of the Wind, tops my all time favorite books. I was less impressed with this book. I felt this book was too similar to Shadow of the wind, had too many characters that were not fully developed, and the ending was not that satisfying - I am still confused. I am curious to hear from other Shadow of the Wind fans to hear what they thought about this book.

Maybe it was just the mood I was in but it was a very slow read. It also gave me nightmares, which is wierd because it isn't really scary- just a little dark

I think this is the darkest of the four, so to speak.
I’m giving it 4 stars because its predecessor was excellent and a tough act to follow, but I really enjoyed the more pronounced gothic style in this one.
Zafón truly shines in his descriptions of the settings, making them incredibly vivid. It felt like a journey through a completely mysterious Barcelona.
