I had such high expectations for this book but they were crushed almost instantly. I found the story boring and the characters really one dimensional. to me it was like an unseasoned steak.

Update: I am bumping this up to 5 stars after reading the second one, [b:A Prince Without a Kingdom|25241576|A Prince Without a Kingdom (Vango, #2)|Timothée de Fombelle|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1429031606s/25241576.jpg|17487651] as I loved this first installment a lot. (Not to say that book 2 wasn't good... just not the same.)

____

I cannot decide on a final rating between 3.5 and 4/5 stars, for Vango: Between Sky and Earth sets up a wonderful alternative reality fantasy, yet leaves much unknown to the reader.

Yes, this is one of those "the cover made me do it"/"I saw it in the library" books... I really need to stay away from those as usually they are long and part of a series and take me down a rabbit hole.

Vango: Between Sky and Earth is an "epic fiction" novel with a copious amount of characters, backstory, and plot that is centered around our hero: the mysterious, romantic, acrobatic, slightly two-dimensional Vango Romano. Someone who seems to be mythical (has a mystery birth, an unknown family, was washed up on a mysterious island, raised by an uber-talented goddess) and mysterious (no one knows much about him, he prefers to be alone, and steeped in nature and its solitudes), handsome (all the women love him), young man who's being chased and persecuted by various types (the Soviet leader Stalin, the French police force, his long lost lover, Ethel---each with their own backstories) only to have revealed in the last fifty pages a major plot point that will carry readers into [b:A Prince Without a Kingdom|25241576|A Prince Without a Kingdom (Vango, #2)|Timothée de Fombelle|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1429031606s/25241576.jpg|17487651]...

This is a whirlwind of a book. A FUN read. I really, really love it! But, I feel like I don't know anything about Vango himself, as the author focuses more on the other characters and their wonderful lives. Perhaps this makes sense. Vango doesn't know about himself, thus maybe the reader shouldn't as well. It would be nice to know more about his present thoughts and feelings rather than just his rogue escape attempts. He really is a shadow compared to others in the novel. (Hence the debate on the rating.)

I will definitely read the second one and really look forward to the story's conclusion!
