Ghost Roast was truly perfect. The illustration and art work by Emily Cannon suites the story so well and is gorgeous. The story by Shawnee and Shawnelle Gibbs is amazing. The first thing I adored was the setting, with a rich history of ghosts and haunting New Orleans offered the perfect backdrop for Ghost Roast. On top of this the characters are amazing. I loved Chelsea Grant right away.
The main thing I adored, which tied to the story, was how such heavy and poignant topics were explored in a tasteful manner but at the same time not hidden or veiled such as slavery and racism. We also have topics such as teenage struggles to fit in, in general making the characters relatable to a young adult audience. There are all kinds of things to love in this graphic novel, not least ghostly familiars, fun characters, the importance of history and the legacy it leaves behind and so much more.
While Ghost Roast is a complete graphic novel and is perfect as is I really, really, really hope we get more Chelsea and the team in the future be it in New Orleans or somewhere else. It’s such a fun and enjoyable read while also offering important commentary on the lasting legacy of slavey and the difficulties of being a teenage.

This is a really fun, youthful take on ghost hunting on New Orleans with your dad as a teen thing to be popular. The illustrations really add to the story. The plantation history coming through in a modern setting as the sins of past ancestors. Very interesting storytelling. And very entertaining.
