Cute YA graphic novel that reads a bit on the younger side. It has some good moments about the history of slavery in New Orleans.  Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this as much as I wanted to because the MC has a crush on the son of a plantation owner who’s amazingly a woke ass guy and it felt a bit “white savior”….theres a plot twist near the end that makes it better but I wish we’d known that plot point in the beginning rather than being a plot twist cause it dampens the reading experience before you find out. On a good note, the art is wonderful!

This covers some of the overlooked, or intentionally hidden, aspects of interracial relations in the South and on plantations, while being and fun and hopeful comic story.

I really enjoyed this! It was a quick read and reminded me of one of my all time favorite childhood series, The Mediator. The art was charming and the story had a lot going on for it. As with most graphic novels that I read, I do wish it was more of a series than a one off just because I really enjoy the premise. Also Ghost Cat. Enough said.

A debut young adult graphic novel about ghosting hunting, a mystery, a tiny bit of romance, and is BIPOC? Sign me up! Ghost Roast delivers a paranormal adventure full of first crushes, lost histories, and the impossible task of fitting in when your dad is a professional ghost hunter. Themes of history and self-discovery are infused throughout the story.

After years of being a nobody Chelsea is now a member of the popular crowd. On a night out with friends, things get rowdy and she ends up in jail. As punishment she has to spend the summer working for her father’s ghost-removal agency. When her dad is hired to exorcize Harrington Manor, Chelsea assumes the job will be another bust. However, soon after setting foot on the former sugarcane plantation, Chelsea realizes she can see and speak to the manor’s ghosts. As far as the illustrations I loved the deep vibrant color palette and the different tones used to indicate whether we were in the present or in the past. It had such a fun whimsical vibe that fit perfectly with the story and the attention to detail in regards to the characters was great.
