I keep forgetting how much I love these novels by Louise Penny, and how much I love stepping away into the small town of Three Pines for a while.

Armand Gamache is a bit larger than life, a little better, a little more pure, so if that's the sort of thing that bugs you, consider yourself warned. I love the Canadian point of view that pervades these books, which is a refreshing change from similar American and British authors.

If you've not read any of Penny's novels, I suggest starting at the beginning of the series just to allow yourself to enjoy the full depth and breadth of character development.

I normally enjoy this series but this was my least favorite so far.  Gamache is started a new job at the Surete.  Meanwhile in Three Pines and old map was found in the walls of the Bistro. There are two mysteries, one is the mystery of the map and the other is the murder of an instructor at the Surete. I enjoyed the map mystery but the murder mystery was weak and easy to solve. The writing is good as always but there were lot of plot holes.  This series should be read in order.

In brief, this is the best of the books thus far. The story allows for some connection to the storyline of Francouer’s corrupt reach but stands squarely facing forward, loosening the bond to that past.
The older characters are true to their nature and the new characters are fresh with some required depth.

It’s an excellent book.
