1. What’s the point of the Hetta companion bearing a striking resemblance to Elsie? It’s emphasised so much. Is Elsie Sarah or something? Sarah mentioned that she thought Rupert would marry her. Plus there’s madness in Elsie’s family as with Rupert’s. The doctor suggests this at the end. But then Sarah arrives and disproves this
2. Elsie was always dropping references to an evil child (who I guess it’s herself) and saying how she couldn’t stand Hetta’s face because she reminds her of herself.
In short, what’s the connection between Hetta + Elsie + Sarah?? For me the ambiguity doesn’t improve the book.
Having said that I read the whole thing in one go and was 100% absorbed
