This is the book-equivalent of a horror movie. The story worms its way into your head and only after the book is over do you realize there might be some leaps of logic or unanswered questions left dangling.  Go into the book with that mindset and you'll enjoy the ride.  If this ever gets turned into a movie, I'd be too scared to watch it for sure - and that's coming from someone who almost never gets scared by books!

i found the overall plot to be interesting but honestly had a hard time staying focused and i'm not sure if that was a problem with me or the book. it was hard to like elsie because, though she came from a working-class family and had only been married into a more well-off family for a month, she still treated all of the servants, maids, etc. like they were beneath her, which i didn't find to be entirely conducive with her own background and upbringing. all of the twists were easily predictable but i did still find the story generally interesting.

This book would make a great horror movie if produced. Had some classic gothic tropes that I love and gave me that creepy feeling in the pit of my stomach that makes u run to ur bedroom when it's dark. The companions were the most creepy of all as you can just see them waiting for you in the shadows.
I enjoyed how no one in this novel is perfect they all have their flaws which I think makes them feel even more human. The creepy mansion and superstitions were all the things I love in a gothic novel. The multiple storylines were interesting and tied together nicely as well.
Unfortunately I seem to be falling into this trap allot recently where I love the novel but hate the ending. This maybe due to my penchant for a good ending I hate ambiguous or unhappy ones which is a personal preference so if you do not mind that this will not bother you. I also felt like there was more needed in the ending after the shock revelation to be completely satisfied. I turned last page and was like is that it.
Overall still a good story and would recommend as long as u dont require a happy ending to be satisfied
