This book was, of course, about Gunnar and Kadlin. After reading book one I started to wondering about them, and since I had no idea what to expect, besides the obvious (the love), I enjoyed the book a lot. I wasn't sure what to think about Gunnar when I first read about him in the 1st book. And I knew Kadlin was sweet and strong, so I knew it could be an interesting combination.

I must say that compared to the first one, I loved it, but I still prefer that first one.

This was one of those books that I enjoyed reading because of the female main character. I love reading about Kadlin. After that conversation between her and Eirik in book one, I know I would love her. That been said, after Gunnar returned wounded from a battle and Eirik send him home, with Vidar (her brother), I know he would find out about some secrets that Kadlin was keeping from him, and I had no idea how she would take it. Hell! I didn't even know how Gunnar would take it!

Anyway, of course I loved all the sweet moments between them and I loved how Kadlin just took charged and tried her hardest to help him get better. She really was trying to get him to be himself again, because he was just broken. And that was something I was not expecting.

And before I forget, the Jarl... I already didn't like him in that first book. Although I get it's the way they were raised, so of course he would have those thoughts and attitudes... It still made me mad at him for saying some things to Gunnar when they got together again. But that ending... Oh well, I'm not talking about that, I don't want to give any spoilers.

Back to the main characters...

This book was different from the first one, because the characters were childhood friends, so they knew each other for a long time. I always found intriguing the idea of childhood friends to lovers kind of stories. So I was quite happy to read Gunnar and Kadlin's love story.

You never know what to expect when it's that type of story because some problems always appear and they have to find ways to get through them. Sometimes that means ignoring their love for each other, or going away (running away). And you can see those difficulties in this book too, and you also see them trying to figure it out. That was really something I enjoyed.

I enjoyed their interaction, even if sometimes I wanted to slap Gunnar for being such an idiot, but they did have a good chemistry I think. And Harper showed how Kadlin loved him by writing so many beautiful scenes were Kadlin was such a kind and strong woman that really cared about that man, the childhood friend she always love. And those were some pretty moments.

Although I loved the first book a tinny bit more, it was still a 5* read to me.
