There was nothing inherently wrong with it. I personally got so frustrated with the MC response to bullying and her self-worth that I couldn’t continue. I found the other characters to be annoying (which I understand is due to caricature consistent with the target audience reading level). I might come back to this story in a different format, perhaps physical book, and try again when I’m in a more empathetic headspace.

Wanted to like it because I found the novel too slow, but this one actually went too fast. Lots of impactful moments got squished or skipped, like they were told not to go over a certain number of pages, which is disappointing. The art was delightful and I would have loved to see more of it.

A fast-but-nuanced read with a lot of delightful characters. Definitely moving the rest of the series up my TBR.

It took me a while to get into it but the second half of the book moved along quickly and the story was interesting.

After unwittingly waking an ancient demon from a cursed lamp, Aru has until the new moon to stop him ending the world. Think Percy Jackson but with a feisty female protagonist (two counting her hypochondriac ‘sister’ Mini) and Hindu mythology. Loved the humour, and the bond that developed between the girls, the way their strengths complemented each other. Really enjoyed learning more about Hindu mythology- the glossary at the back was certainly appreciated. A cracking story that will be perfect for my future grandchildren.

To all the holy deities I liked this one. So here they come reasons to skip it.

1. You have a romantic picture of geniesmin a bottle. Like all genies need to be the helpful-Robin-Williams-voiced-Disney ones.

2. You put greek mythology on a pedestal and don't want to challenge it's place in the spotlight.

3. You think that two girls demanding to be called heroines is to much feminism.

4. You can't stand the sarcastic and witty side kick pet.

5. You find twelve year olds that quote Batman, The Matrix, Lord of the Rings and Friends to unrealistic for a fantasy novel.

Be aware there isn't one reason I would skip this gem  of a book for. Like always take this list as serious as you want. Have fun.
