A fast-but-nuanced read with a lot of delightful characters. Definitely moving the rest of the series up my TBR.

I had such a good time with this.

I'm very behind on all of the RRP books (and RR books too) and decided to pick this one up on a whim, and I'm so glad I did.

This book follows our main protagonist Aru Shah, a 12 year-old girl who is living with her mother in a museum in Atlanta. One day, when some of her classmates are over, she wants to impress them, so she lights an ancient lamp which starts an apocalypse event and reveals her to be a pandava and things go from there.

I've never read anything by Chokshi before and I really enjoyed her writing and some of the humor elements she incorporated. It just flowed really well and made for a fast and entertaining read.

The plot of this is very similar to the Percy Jackson books, but I felt like there was a lot that set this apart as well. Regardless, if you know something works, I say it doesn't hurt to use it.

The world and the mythology elements were the strongest part of the book for me and I loved learning about all of the Hindu myths and legends. I knew about some from school and various different classes and classmates I had over the years, but they were presented in such a cool way here and I can't wait to learn more about everything as the series goes on.

Finally, the characters. Aru was a really interesting character for me to follow and I loved reading about her. Her "lying" (I put that in quotes for a reason) was a big part of the plot and I really enjoyed seeing her journey with that aspect as well. Mini owns a part of my soul. I could really relate to her and she just brought so much to the story for me. I loved all of the gods and other side characters we met along the way as well.

All in all, an absolutely fantastic read, and I can't wait to continue with the series.
