Jennifer Egan

3.39 AVERAGE

Jennifer did a little too much self-conscious editing (many of the word choices seemed out of place and a little like shift F7), however in an era with too little editing, it was refreshing. I really liked the pace of the interwoven stories. Also, Moose. What is his mental illness? It was distracting. Otherwise, when you consider this was written in the late 1990s (pre cell phone, Facebook, and 2011 terrorism), it reads as a reflection on a simpler time.

I like Egan's writing style a lot, but her characters are always so disturbed. I thought the three main story lines were going to come together in a big, crazy ending, but was disappointed that they all just kind of fizzled out.

I liked it, but for me it didn't come together quite as well as A Visit from the Goon Squad.

Read after goon squad. Similar threaded stories feel with things coming together neatly.

The only book I've ever read centered in Rockford, IL. I read it soon after my in-laws moved to Rockford.

Loved it. Egan had me hooked like this was a pop thriller but with such thought-provoking, chilling material and gorgeous prose.
I started reading this book because I was on a body horror bent started by the movie The Substance, and while this is completely different, the way identity and the bifurcation of self is dealt with certainly engaged me in a way that scratched that itch.
A little dated in some parts, but in a kind of charming dot-com-bubble kind of way.

Jennifer Egan is awesome.

3.5 stars. Anything by Jennifer Egan is going to be beautifully written with compelling characters and an interesting plot. But the way the stories came together in the end was a bit forced for me, one of the subplots felt completely unbelievable, and at least one of the threads never became clear enough to appreciate. I would have loved a shorter, tighter novel more narrowly focused on Charlotte Swenson and Z's stories.
