When I read Cock Down the Block by Amy Award, it took me a while to get into it. It’s hypocritical for me to say that insta-love just doesn’t work for me, especially when my own characters fall for each other pretty quickly. The trope is fine when done well, when there’s enough there to show us that they’re falling for each other.
Weiner Across the Way was lacking that. Declan gets a hard on for Kelsey Best, who is basically a much chunkier Taylor Swift, as soon as he lays eyes on her. Okay, fine, she’s hot and famous, and we all know a Kingman brother loves a big girl, but the way he talks about her when he doesn’t even know her, borders on the fetishisation of plus-size women.
The fake-dating trope doesn’t really apply here, as they fall for each other pretty quickly and neither of them really touch on whether the agreement is in place or not, which I felt was a real shame as it’s a great source of proper conflict in a story.
To top it off, I found the storyline underdeveloped, and that insignificant moments were dragged out while the more important parts of the story were rushed through. The author explains that she loves cheese and a HEA, but that shouldn’t come at a cost of underdeveloped characters and a storyline that doesn’t transition well from one scene to the next.
I was disappointed in this story, although I read it to the end, and I will give Award a second chance with her third book. Let’s hope she turns it around for me, or she may fall off my auto-buy author list.

Not a fan of the Taylor and Travis fanfic done here 💀
Also I think it’s weird that Kelsey was known as the biggest pop star in the country despite Taylor swift existing in the same verse???
This really threw me off 😭😭
