Interesting concept but a really slow and disjointed read.

Hugely fell flat for me. The premise and theory should be fascinating, the plot thrilling but the most thrilling aspect was realising I was at the last page and the slog was over.
More of the slave ship and, arguably most important.. the octopuses!! Would have elevated the pace and enjoyment. Everything else could have been cut and the characters needed a lot of work as warming to them was as much use as melting an ice cream in a freezer.
I probably should have DNFed but my insatiable hunger for all things weird and nautical kept me swimming with hope of a pay off that never emerged.

the scifi of exploring sentient life- not elsewhere in the universe but deep in our oceans. Scifi that gets my imagination revved up. Love it.

Really interesting in theory and good writing. Was definitely drawn in but feels like it was cut short. The ending was not satisfying to me nor did it feel like the story came to a completion. So much build up for not a lot of pay-off.

So many interesting ideas brushed upon, and i kept getting more invested, but by the end the pay off was a little bit hand-wavy. Sometimes the leaps and reliance on intuition felt arbitrary to progress the plot, other times the philosophising added to the scientific focus. There were moments were paragraphs felt repetitive and i thought i was getting deja vu.

I think the book was a bit ambitious in all the topics it was trying to focus on, but all the topics were things i was interested in, so definitely confused on how i feel. I read through very invested, but not a fan of the end i think, but i dont /hate/ it.
