Great continuation of the story. I liked it even more than book 1.

2.5 stars only bc it actually started to get interesting toward the end, otherwise it was still bad
“No ropes can hold you. No cage can trap you.”
I was so amazed and excited to have been chosen to receive this book as an ARC! I devoured this book. Loved the relationship building between characters. Loved the world building. Loved everything! It is a unique and fun story to read. I liked how it was relatable to facing challenges and how the fmc was able to have her moments of weakness and be built back up again stronger than before. I liked the characters showed vulnerabilities instead of hiding them. It was so fun to finish and realize that some predictions I had were correct and to find out the plot twists at the end that made my jaw drop. Unique story, great characters, relatable moments, fiery tension between characters, feelings of pure hatred for some characters, and amazing writing to put you in the moment throughout the entire book. Love this series and I CAN NOT wait for book 3!

I think I've found one of my new favorite fantasy series! It has been ages since I found a story with characters that I care deeply about and I know Lyr and Rhyan will stay with me once their story ends.
Lyriana's growth in this book was astounding, both emotionally and physically. Her struggles were less internal in this book, but still incredibly difficult. We see her come into her strength and confidence. She's learning to rely on her own abilities and I have a feeling we'll see even more of that in Lady of the Drowned Empire. I'm hoping we get a chance to see her use more of her wits as well.
My suspicion about who she is was finally confirmed and I couldn't be happier! Now we'll just have to see if my thoughts about Rhyan will also be confirmed. I'm curious to see how they navigate their relationship following the events of GDE.
Have I mentioned that the author had a recap at the beginning of the book? I couldn't believe it! Although, with the amount of recall/recap we had throughout the book, I don't know if the recap was necessary. Either one or the other would have been fine. That's the only reason this wasn't a full 5 star read for me.
That being said, Frankie Diane Mallis' writing style feels so fresh, her characters are complex, and I can't wait to see where the story ends up!
