This story is familiar but somehow that doesn’t matter at all while reading. It’s heart-wrenching and  predictable at times, but also funny and full of so many types and ways of demonstrating of love. Hard to believe that Demon is only 17 or 18 by the time the book ends. He lives at least 3 full lifetimes by then.

Such an amazing book. The characters are all so complex and real. The author has so many things to say, and it's done in such a brutal way. No criticisms.

Barbara created an incredibly memorable narrator in Demon. Not only was he funny and hopefuly in the face of horrifying odds, his story was a perfect lens to showcase the human side of the systemic issues that plague south appalachia. It's all too easy to understand how people can fall into the drug scene, how desparation can fester in a place crafted for low-education industry workers.

Learning what "redneck" originally meant really hit me hard, as someone who grew up in a somewhat rural area and heard a lot of those words thrown around casually. This cast will stick with me, especially June and Emmy and Angus. Read for book club and really enjoyed!!

This may be the best book of the year, the only thing that upset me is how the ending felt too short I wanted to read more!
