The story was good. Not quite what I normally read but I really enjoyed it. Religion, history, and lesbians what more can you ask for.
I do need to be clear that that’s also a really biased review because I bought and read this book on a big vacation and I tend to be easier to please when the sentimental value of the experience colors me looking back on the book.

Beautifully and carefully written. A testament to women’s resilience.
Minor: Violence, Fire/Fire injury, Injury/Injury detail
incredible, beautiful, fantastic. thank the lord for Kiran Millwood Hargrave!
the fact that she was able to tell a story with SUCH similar tropes and plot points without losing any of the immersiveness of it is a testament to her talent. it hasn’t been very long since i read The Mercies so it would’ve been really easy for it to feel boring but i was absolutely engulfed the whole time. heartbreaking, heartwarming and oh god the irony. i am so happy Izzy gave me the gift of discovering this woman. cannot wait to be a lifelong fan

I'm sorry to say I can't get along with KMH's writing style and I found all the characters underdeveloped. perfectly enjoyable read though

This book completely captivated me. The prose were beautiful, and I was fully invested in all the characters. I loved the way different types of “forbidden love” were explored. There were parts of the plot that made me go “huh” at times, but I think that’s attributable to the fact that life/being a woman in 1518 was a trip. This is a bleak one for sure, but I truly loved it. 4.5 ⭐️!!
