Emily Henry delivers her most ambitious work yet with Great Big Beautiful Life, skilfully weaving together romance and historical mystery. The dual timeline structure follows Alice and Hayden competing to write reclusive heiress Margaret Ives' biography, while Margaret's own 1950s Hollywood story unfolds alongside their growing attraction.
What elevates this beyond typical romance is Henry's exceptional character work. Alice and Hayden feel fully realised - their grumpy-sunshine dynamic is earned through authentic backstories that explain their worldviews. The supporting cast is equally well-developed, creating a lived-in world where every character could have their own story.
The historical elements are expertly researched, bringing mid-century Hollywood glamour to vivid life. Margaret's storyline provides genuine mystery and emotional depth that complements rather than competes with the central romance. Henry's world-building seamlessly transitions between eras and settings.
While the pacing occasionally feels uneven as Henry balances multiple storylines, the payoff is worth it. This is Henry's most complex work - a story about truth, family secrets, and how our past shapes our present, wrapped around a genuinely swoon-worthy romance. Fans ready to embrace Henry's evolution will find her most rewarding book yet.

It wasn’t my favorite Emily Henry book, and I still enjoyed it. It was a slow burn then the ending felt really rushed.
Personally, I didn’t super care for the first 30% of the Ives family history.
I really wanted Alice to
make friends on the island and actually hang out with people other than Hayden.
I can understand that the friend group chat was easier for the storyline to not get too long and complicated. Although, she does
stay in Georgia to tell her mom’s story at the end, leaving all her friends in LA

Even having heard spoiler free reviews of this book, I was still surprised by what all made up this book.
If you're like me and first feel in love with Emily Henry for her fun lighthearted romances, this might not be what you want, but it is such a great book. Do know though this is like 60% the unraveling of the celebrity's story the other 40% the romance.
Few things I liked
1. I love how the Male love interest is given good reasons for how he is acting in the situation they're in. I never had to go for chapters on en's asking what's his deal or just assuming he does it solely for tension.
2. I like the secondary plot being something completely different that interacted with the present plot. The main issue I had with Happy Place was the flashbacks, but with this book, they're done so well.
3. For what a lot of people will call a "silly little romance" this book actually looks at and confronts the issue of generational trauma really well.

Everyone out here giving this book 1-2 stars is kwazyyyy! Even if this isn't your favorite of Emily's books, or it wasn't as romance-focused as her past books, or it wasn't what you were expecting - IT IS STILL OBJECTIVELY A WELL WRITTEN BOOK! I actually cannot with people giving it such low ratings just because she deviated a bit from what she's written in the past.

I personally was eating up the main plot of the story, the interviews etc - I was fascinated by Margaret's family and her life, and that's what kept me reading. At it's core it is still very much an Emily Henry book - and I personally would love for Emily to write more literary/general fiction books! Her ability to tell a deep and complex story is clearly showcased in GBBL!!

Is insta-love/attraction my personal favorite trope? no. Did I wish there was a bit more development of the romance? Yes. The present day romance (cause let's be honest Margaret has a romance story being told here too!) between Alice and Hayden could've been more developed, and honestly I would've even read a longer book to allow for this. But the core of this book is the mystery of Margaret's life being unraveled as it's told to Alice. I was near-tears at the ending with Alice's own family development. Lots of parallels to be drawn to Taylor Swift songs (which we all know Emily is a stan) here.

Margaret did make me mad at the ending when she wrote off Hayden saying 'he doesn't like her' but I mostly forgave her for righting it in the end.

Once again, a great book by Emily Henry. I really loved the story telling. Just a warning, as much as love is a central theme of the book, the love story between Alice and Hayden is not a main focus so if that’s what you’re looking for, maybe this isn’t for you.
