- Audrey was largely absent given how impactful her illness was on Alice. We never meet her outside of text messages! Alice is out here banging on Hayden’s door because she thinks he’s unresponsive, I guess because that happened with Audrey, but we never get a deeper understanding of that sister relationship.
- Given that the Laura/Margaret sister relationship was so important, I would have liked to see that mirrored in Alice’s journey. Instead, it’s focused on Alice and her mom. Because her mom doesn’t take her career seriously. Which kind of fell flat for me?
- And oh wait! There’s dad trauma too, which again feels surface-level outside of him being Alice’s introduction to Cosmo Sinclair.
- As much as I enjoyed the Margaret plot, I didn’t feel invested in her story. I feel like we needed a chapter or two of context and getting the reader to care about a fictional tragic heiress. Maybe Cosmo Sinclair gets a posthumous Grammy, so his tragic death and Margaret’s disappearance is in the news again, thus prompting the comment on Alice’s article. Idk!
- We get these big reveals about Cecil and Jodi, but never hear from them again. Does Alice confront Cecil about whether he knew? Was he protective of Margaret and therefore suspicious? Does Jodi admit outright to setting this all up? I wanted closure, not a HEA with a pregnancy!
- Alice was about to give up or share her big break because of a man!!! Instead she gets knocked up! By a man who initially insulted her skill as a writer!
- Emily Henry, I am a fan. But girl, I can only take so many mousy-blonde, somewhat awkward FMCs and dark, disgruntled MMCs! I get it, I do, but I read all your books and it gets old!
