I love an EH romance. I was not thrilled with Hayden at the start, I am not a huge fan of grumpy MMC, but he warmed into a more protective character.

The romance is pretty quick and the biography is a little slow. I liked the chemistry and bought into the tension and slow burn.

Margaret’s story is really captivating around the 2/3 mark but wraps up rather quickly with a so so conclusion.

Overall I enjoyed it but not one I’d reread soon.

I liked this book and enjoyed reading it a lot. I do see the connection to TJR, especially to Evelyn Hugo, but it was an entirely different book in terms of structure.

Unfortunately, I was not so invested in Margaret's story, I believe it could have deserved more "show, don't tell" and I while the "stories" had a different writing style, which made them more authentic, I like Emily Henry's general writing style better.

Then again, I enjoyed reading about Alice and Hayden a lot.

Okay, listen I didn’t hate it. I did enjoy the book but!
I guessed Hayden being related to Margaret pretty early o ok but I still enjoyed it. I wish we got a little more development in Hayden and Alice’s relationship, especially emotionally from Hayden’s side,  and that we got a more fleshed out happy ending for them. It all felt a bit rushed in the end.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book! The last quarter of the book felt like it flew by, and I rarely say this but it could have been longer?? There were a looot of meandering family complexities that were a little hard to follow, but I think it paid off in the end with a twist I wasn’t exactly expecting. Margaret was such a complex character and I really liked her, especially when she pissed me off. :)

Romance between the two MCs was sweet and cute and fun. It left me wanting more and I’m not so sure that’s a bad thing!

So, your mileage may vary so take the following with a grain of salt. I wanted to adore this book but I never fully clicked with it, which surprised and disappointed me. It took me a long while to engage with the story, I think because of the split focus with the past and present dual storylines. And while I liked both Alice and Hayden as characters, it felt like their relationship was sped up and superficially developed. (I would have really liked to see Hayden's POV alongside Alice's.) I had a hard time investing in them together as a couple, and the insta-lust felt like a shortcut to emotional intimacy. Margaret's backstory was interesting  and I know her life story is what brought Alice and Hayden together, but it didn't really work for me as a romantic plot device for them. Not sure if this makes any sense, but it's like there was simultaneously both too much and not enough going on in this story. There were some enjoyable moments and it did pick up towards the end. I usually really like Emily Henry but this one wasn't the book for me.

I think this is my favorite Emily Henry book to date! The story is so sweet and I love the dual timelines. It’s equal parts romance and historical fiction/mystery. It didn’t feel predictable or boring at all and I probably could’ve finished it in a sitting haha. Definitely want to reread this one again in the future!
