I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think this book would have been better without the romance. Hayden never felt like more than a cardboard cutout of a character, so I never cared about the romance and whether one of them getting this writing job over the other would affect their relationship.

Now the story of Alice and Margaret learning to trust each other, and Margaret's mostly-true stories, were a major highlight. I enjoyed Alice as a main character, even if I couldn't relate to her overly-sunny disposition. If more of the story could have been these two interacting (maybe with more Jodi too?) I would have liked this more.

I also didn't care for the choice to make Hayden the secret grandchild here. Because I didn't connect to him at all throughout this book, and how we got a single conversation about his mom, it felt like a let down for that relationship (or lack thereof) to be the catalyst of the book. Either make it connected to Alice or flesh out both Hayden and his mother more.

This book is so Evelyn Hugo coded, which is both a blessing and a curse bc I LOVE Evelyn Hugo so I ate this upppp BUT it does feel a bit too familiar in some places. However, I LOVE this experimental prose Emily used in this book—would love more in that style!

A sweeping Old Hollywood love story that would dazzle fans of Evelyn Hugo, nestled within a frame narrative about what it's like to fall in love and give only half of yourself, Great Big Beautiful Life is a sprawling look at all the types of family dysfunction you could possibly have, and all the different kinds of love that come out of it. You think you've guessed right and you haven't. GBBL is also a damning portrayal of celebrity culture and the way obsession can cost lives. But it's still a love story, I promise.

I would have loved to read this in dual perspective! But I LOVED this book! Emily Henry is one of my favorite authors, she creates beautifully crafters stories with an intriguing plot. The style of book was slightly different from her usual writing, but it kept me guessing, and trying to put all the pieces together. The ending was unexpected, but tied it all together. It was fantastic! 10/10 recommend
