I flew through this one! It was really well done. I cared about the romance and “the story”. The rivals aspect worked well. The side story was interesting. The ending was a bit of a letdown but overall it was good. I would try another by this author especially on audio. The narrator was great.

Plot: Two writers compete for a chance to write the memoir of an heiress who disappeared decades before.

Came for a Romcom, Stayed for what is essentially a love letter to journalism.

Above and Beyond all, this is a story about love -in all it's forms- from familial, platonic, romantic to all the complexities and nuances that comes with loving.

Grief is a central theme, handled with the thoughtfulness that is associated with Emily Henry's writing; someone who has always captured at it's most raw tender form.

The Cast is delightful, you can't help but empathize and care for and with all the flawed humanity of the characters, no one is perfect and this book serves as a remind that it's ok not to be, not when the people who love you will do in spite of everything.

Don't get it twisted though, the romance is off the charts, Alice and Hayden may have invented a new level to being down bad for each other, the chemistry and tension is truly off the charts.

Alice Scott might be my new favorite emhen FMC, a juxtaposition of hopeful whimsiness that isn't born out of naivety but rather having seen the worst and still choosing love not despite bur rather because of it.

The main question that haunts this book is that about agency and heritage, how much of our identity and what we go through is defined or impacted by those who came before us; pondering the validity of the concept of free will.

If nothing else, trust that this is a book that will heal you, leaving you with teary eyed with a fluttery heart.

This book felt like it was trying to be two books at once. It was trying to be a bit of both a literary mystery and a contemporary romance book. The two didn’t weave that well together, however.

I hated all the edging the author did with the MC’s sexual relationship. I think she was trying to keep it from being “too spicy” for her readers, but still spicy enough. However, it just got frustrating. I get the building anticipation of them having intercourse, but it just took too long!

I liked most of the characters, all the townspeople, Cecil and Margaret especially, though others not as much, looking at you, Alice, and especially her mom, and Theo.

Overall, it was a decent book. Mostly, the structure just didn’t work for me. As well as the drawn-out nature of the MCs’ relationship, and their admitting their feelings and desires.

Narrator Rating: 4.75 stars

I wish they’d gotten someone else to narrate the section of the book that was supposed to be part of the biography. Julia Whelan is wonderful and did an amazing job, however, I feel like having dual narration would have been better for the two intertwined sections of the book.

Most of the storyline in the subject of their biography largely felt like a distraction from the main plot. I still don’t understand why she needed to go onto the family history. It didn’t feel relevant until the end. Reminded me a bit of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
