It's hard to believe after a few great novels that Eco would turn out to be an utter boor.

As I have mentioned before Eco's essays are amazing philosophical works and this collection just shines. The title piece is the best piece of non fiction I've ever read. Only Eco can use a defrosting salmon as a criticism of modern energy saving technological devices. Genius. The rest of the essays shine just as brightly.
