I feel some sort of way that I was not as enthralled with the magic of this book as others were, but the truth is, I just wasn't. I think it was just a little too juvenile for me maybe? I will say, my son loved it and he is 7.

Basically, these kids are trying to save their grandad in their imaginary, childhood land (basically a Narnia retelling). Anyway...because they made this land up when they were very young, the names of the places (the End, Archie Playgo) and characters (Crowky, the mermaid-witch Mitch, the wizard-ninja Wininja) were really basic. They were a little cheesy IMO.

That being said, there was a depth to the relationship between the siblings that I really enjoyed. They are twins, a boy and a girl, and as they have gotten older (going into middle school now), they have started to grow apart. This really bothers the boy. I felt like this took the typical sibling struggles trope to the next level.

BUT! 5 stars for the illustrations! They are beautiful! I also think it is really awesome that they are sprinkled throughout the chapters. This really helped my son to stay engaged in the story, but did not feel graphic-novely at all.
