I really liked the two main characters. They thought clearly and really seemed to think things through. Some parts of this book were really easy to figure out, but then bam! there is this whole other secret on the ship that totally threw me for a loop! I liked that it was a murder mystery and a futuristic space journey and romance. Some people have compared this book to Glow, and while it does have some similarities, I liked this one better, the characters (so far, I don't know about future ones in the series) are way more like-able.
Fast, enthralling read that raises a lot of heavy questions about society and utopia. I thought I had the whole book figured out, but Revis surprised me with the ending. Worth picking up for a fun, fast read.
I was looking forward to this book because of all the hype, and the fact that I think Beth Revis (whose blog/twitter/tumblr I followed before I was able to get my hands on the book itself) is completely kindred-spirit-worthy. I was drawn in immediately by Amy's voice—so much so that I worried I wouldn't like her as much when she was awake and interacting with the ship, but I was wrong on that one.
Elder's voice wasn't as enticing to me... I liked him better through Amy's POV also. I have to say I knew who the killer was early on... there was a little too much foreshadowing done there, I think it could have been dealt with a lighter hand. Another red herring would have served better, I think. It would have been great if Amy really had been unsure about either Elder or Harley.
So, for me the reveal of the murderer wasn't that shocking. THAT SAID, the twist after it certainly was.
I was also unfortunately spoiled about Harley's death. Which I found a little underwhelming. I'm going to miss him in the next book, though, that's for sure.

Considering we've been experiencing an unreliable narrator. And I DO like unreliable narrators. Well... once in a while. I think this works. The only reason I wasn't 100% shocked by it is because, as I said, I follow Beth Revis around on the internet, and I had seen a blog post of hers where she talks about Elder's obsessive love for Amy before she wakes up. Luckily I'd forgotten about that by this point in the book. When I got to Elder's confession to the readers, though, it clicked into place.I was also unfortunately spoiled about Harley's death. Which I found a little underwhelming. I'm going to miss him in the next book, though, that's for sure.
Upon reflection, I downed this from 4 stars to 3 because the solution to the central mystery was incredibly obvious to me - it felt to me like a case of otherwise smart, capable characters being rendered unrealistically oblivious in order to keep the plot under control. Pet peeve. That aside, this was well done and enjoyable. Refreshing to read a YA trilogy with a harder sci-fi bent.
I found the concept of this book intriguing and the story was constantly surprising. Amy and her parents are frozen and placed in storage on a space ship that will take 300 years to get to the planet where they will colonize. Elder is going to be the new leader of the ship when the current Eldest dies. He has never known anything but the ship and its mono ethnic inhabitants until the day he accidentally discovers the cryo-lab and frozen Amy with her pale skin and flaming red hair. When Amy is awakened early, a series of events that will reveal truths about Eldest, the ship, and it's mission is unleashed.
This book has dashes of Battlestar Galactica, The Giver, and Sleeping Beauty. I wanted to give it more stars because I really liked the premise, but the relationship between Elder and Amy feels so rushed that it jarred me out of the story a couple of times. I will probably try the sequel when I get a chance.

This wasn't the best YA scifi book I've ever read, but darn it, it was compelling. Sending you off in space in hypersleep...and you wake up? Yes.
pretty solid and enjoyable-- liked the sci-fi aspect, and the downplayed romance. just found out it is a triology though i'm not sure how much i feel the need to read the next books. if they fall in to my lap, i may.
It had a lot more suspense and drama than I was expecting. Full of little surprises that kept me guessing until the very end.
I usually hate any books with a Sci-Fi feel to them. I'll watch Star
Trek, but that's really about all I can usually tolerate. I've just never liked the genre. This book came very highly recommended from a YA book blog that I read, and I thought, why not? The library had it as an ebook, and then I could read it and not feel like I had to finish it because I spent money on it if I didn't like it. The problem was putting it down! I read very late into the night, going to sleep at 3 or 4 am since I couldn't stop reading until it was done! This was fantastic, and so different from what I usually read, and what I've always thought Sci-Fi was all about.
