First of all: YAY I FINALLY FINISHED A BOOK FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LIKE OVER A WEEK WOOOO. Now on to the actual(ish) review! I AM SO MAD AT MYSELF FOR WAITING SO LONG TO READ THIS. I've had it on my shelf for years and finally decided to pick it up on a whim and WOW. I loved it SO MUCH. I want the next ones already bc I am dying to know how it ends!!
I picked this as the second book to read during #Xmasbooktubeathon 2014. I will talk more about it in my video but I started it at 10:30pm and finished it at 2:15am, so there's that....

You know, this book isn't without it's problems, but I found that I really liked it. And it wasn't because I found Revis' signature inside, no not at all, though it did make my day. This is a dystopia in space, written before the Hunger Games craze, so it doesn't have all the same elements, with a plot rehashed. Actually, this is exactly what I wanted after finishing Delirium, a world after a rebellion, the healing, not just war and strife. The world that Amy wakes up in is terrifying. A huge ship is still tiny when you remember just how big our Earth is, and let me tell you, if it wasn't snowing outside, I would have run out to kiss the ground. I mean, people have just recently started realizing that we take our Earth for granted. It is our home and we've basically been chipping away at the foundation, and only recently realized it was going to cost us big time. Well, this book is like one of the outcomes. Amy and her parents were cryogenically froze, then she's woken up, before she's supposed to. I'm going to admit right now, that I wouldn't have been able to survive it. People that live on the ship and haven't been frozen are basically cattle, without thought or individuality, and those who do have it are considered insane. The only people who are somewhat normal are the people in charge and even they are somewhat insane. Then someone starts killing other frozen people and Amy along with the only person who seems to like her, Elder, are trying to figure out why and who. The romance is somewhat on a back burner, and I really liked that, they're just getting know each other and it's really sweet to see them grow closer. I was also so proud of Elder when he had admitted to something that he had done, it takes courage, and it shows that he trusts Amy. It also means we're not going to get an annoying "he's hiding something from me" and Elder acting guilty but being to afraid to show it, plot--which is a good thing. It means there are bigger and better things to look forward to.

TW: Rape
I think that that situation was handled rather poorly. Saying "oh, it's just the way they act during season" doesn't fix what happened to her, and it doesn't punish Luthe, who knew exactly what he was doing. In fact, Luthe disappears from the story after that event and we never hear of him again. And it wasn't just that Amy got cornered and she managed to escape, she was actually pinned down by three men, her clothes was ripped off and one of them did molest her. She does have a subsequent break down, then there's a bit of a conflict, and she seems to forget about, but I rather doubt she would have gotten over it quite so fast. Most importantly, even if the other two men couldn't be punished because they're brainless, Luthe definitely should have been. It's disturbing and disgusting. And I really wish Revis had handled it better.
You know what got me even more mad? The fact that most other reviewers don't even seem to find this seem problematic aside from how graphic it is. This is a problem.

I love the originality of this plot compared to all the other dystopian YAL I've been reading. More sci fi than the others have been, which made it more intriguing. There was a mystery and lots of plot twists that kept me engaged, especially in the 2nd half. I will be reading the sequel.
Science fiction and young adult is not a combination I see very often so I was excited to get to read this.
It is a tough gap to bridge but I think Beth Revis does a very good job of it. The novel isn’t perfect. You can probably guess who the antagonist is within the first few chapters. But the complexity of the universe Revis created captured enough of my attention that I wanted to find out how it happens (not just who dun it). I also genuinely cared about the main and supporting characters. I enjoyed this journey and will be reading the next one soon.
I listened to this book as an audio book. I usually don’t mention this in my reviews but it is relevant for this one. The audio book is narrated by two different people (a female for Amy and a male for Elder). I felt this added a degree of separation of the two characters in my mind. I think that small detail did a lot for the audio book and I highly recommend that format.

An enjoyable YA read where romance isn't constantly derailing everything haha! (Although romance is certainly coming in future books).
What stopped me from loving this book? Firstly, I didn't really like any of the main characters. Both Amy and Elder are rather boring and even their inner monologues don't endear them to me. The only interesting character to me was Harley and we don't get to see enough of him in my opinion.
Secondly, the plot reveals were all obvious. I was hoping that it was designed that way to lull us into a false sense of security and then the real villian would be revealed but alas, no. Everyone (so far) is who you think they are.
Overall, the concept was interesting.
Please be warned that there is an attempted SA on the FMC that hasn't seen any justice or resolution.

Okay so I read this book as it was recommended on here and it looked interesting enough. I don't know what I was expecting but after reading it, I feel like it could possibly do with trigger warnings for sexual assault. There's spoilers and there's things there to protect readers who might be triggered by things. Other then that, I thought it was a really good book. I was pulled right into the story and I really enjoyed it.
