I really enjoyed this book- despite the fact that the author chose to forgo quotes (which I typically hate). It's the story of Patch, Hannah and Matthew, their pasts as children in upstate New York to their presents, haunted by a single act in the woods all those years ago.

Hidden beneath the premise is more than expected, all three characters go on a journey through the book, and at the end, nobody is who you expected them to be. The end confused me a little, but I'll have to go back and read the questions to see if there are any answers.

Disappointing. It strings you along with simple withholding of information. It's so annoying how much the technique of "And then she told him everything" (thereby not telling the reader) is employed.

Also the base story... ugh. OK. I was excited at first because I thought this would be a case of Patch representing non-toxic masculinity. He was perfectly poised to do so and be a triumph of nurturing man over swaggering man, but no. Instead he completely disconnects from reality and the toxic man (very toxic. I can't even... he still blames his victim! And she blames herself!) ends up having just been trying to do right by everyone while being handsome and charismatic.

gross.

This had a wonderfully intriguing beginning. I was hooked from the first paragraph. It had many things I find appealing. However this book reminded me of the TV show Lost. They introduce a lot of interesting ideas, but the payoff is either predictable or poorly concieved. Almost like the author had writen himself into a corner.

Most believable twister I’ve read which is why it gets 4 and not three stars. I appreciate how nuanced the characters all were. It was missing the thrills/hook/page turning atmosphere though, which is why if it weren’t for the well developed characters I’d give it 3 stars.

My first audiobook of the year!
.
I actually got through this book a lot quicker than I usually do for audiobooks. I found the readers’ voices captivating & fitting for the characters they read.
.
The storyline starts off with a horrible act involving 3 teenagers. I was initially shocked & appalled, but throughout the book we learn more about what happened before, and what happens after, and suddenly I wasn’t sure what to feel. 🤔 It was an odd plot with strange characters, but after reflection I think that uniqueness bumped it up a half star for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Okay, so I really wanted to like this one, too. I don’t want to say that Grist Mill Road is a bad book. Even though it’s flawed, it’s still somewhat enjoyable. My advice would be to lower your expectations a bit, and then come to the novel with knowledge that the book really ends with a bang.

Dark suspense novel recounting a disturbing incident from the points of view of three damaged characters. I felt the victim's perspective got short shrift, to the point where she literally handed the story over to her attacker.
